The congregation held its first service at Saint-Pargoire in March 2010, but many members of the congregation have worshipped together since October 2003. A number of English-speaking residents started a Home Eucharist group, and almost all of the original members, including Revd. Richard Acworth, our priest-in-charge, are members of the congregation at Saint-Pargoire.
The Église Reformée is a French Protestant Church similar to the United Reform Church, and it has an intercommunion agreement with the Anglican Communion. The Église Réformée at St Pargoire was keen to establish a link with us, and we've been made very welcome. They have allowed us to share the use of their premises [le Temple] to hold our monthly services. |
The congregation is now officially part of the Church of England in the Diocese in Europe; also as part of the St Michael's parish of Boisset in the Gard, led by Revd. Jenny Deverill. We have set up an 'Association cultuelle' under French law (L'église anglicane à Saint-Pargoire) to manage our affairs. The congregation is very mixed. It includes many people who have retired to the Hérault from the UK, and families who have come to live and work in the area. We are very keen to encourage other residents and visitors who wish to worship in English in the tradition of the Church of England to come along and join us. All baptised Christians are welcome to receive communion. After each service, the congregation stay on to have a cup of coffee, biscuits and a chat, which gives new members a chance to get to know us and make new friends. From time to time we have Congregation meetings which keep people up-to-date with all that is happening in our church. Everyone is welcome to join in. We operate a policy of openness where all ideas and comments are welcome.
